"Without music, life would be a mistake." - Friedrich Nietzsche

Simon Below Quartet

The four young musicians are studying jazz at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne. Their music-making is at times energetically extrovert and at other times melancholy and minimalist. Stylistically, their music can be classified as modern jazz. Simon’s compositions allow a high degree of artistic freedom.
Open compositions guarantee a great sense of anticipation, both for the audience and also – without fail – for the musicians themselves. Not to have all elements of a composition noted down is a central feature of the band’s sound. According to Simon, “processes of improvisation and communication should not be restricted by too many instructions”. It is therefore perfectly possible for phases of free improvisation to occur, and individual musicians may pause at any time, enabling duo or even solo passages. The aim is to produce attractive music.
